Etihad Airways – Would You Pay Extra For This?

The Game Has Changed

Etihad have pulled it out of the bag with their latest idea – and trust me it could take off! (im sorry I had too)

This new upgrade allows economy passengers to bid for up to three empty seats around them for the duration of their flight. Bidding starts at the time of the booking on Etihad’s website. There’s a minimum and maximum bid for each seat, and if you’re a member of the frequent flyer programme, you get some form of priority over non-members.

If your bid wins, you’ll get an email confirming your seat assignment. If not, you’ll receive an email within 32 hours of departure, informing you that you’ll have neighbors. (In other words back to normal like the rest of us)

Etihad says its new upgrade option;

“gives guests the opportunity for increased space, comfort and privacy, at a price that is affordable.”

Etihad Airways - would you pay extra for this

Unfortunately, they refuse to specify on the price. So it is really difficult to analyse whether this new concept is better value than buying a business or First Class seat with all the trimmings! But to be fair a first class ticket on Etihad is expensive as f–k!

You know when it comes to Air travel most airlines are reducing leg room and adding fees. At least Etihad are trying to offer another alternative for their passengers (even if they’re making extra cash in the process). Let’s be real here – it may not be the same as a £21,000 First Class seat, but it’s got to be better than Wizzair!

As always – #livebetter

NoW that’s an interesting concept. I always find it strange when people pay too much for flights. I mean, it’s a couple of hours you spend up there. Why waste so much money?

Personally, I’d rather just save up points and fly in Etihad’s business or first class cabins. Even with extra seats around you economy isn’t so comfortable…

this is crazy, you have to bid for a good seat on Etihad Airways and if you’re denied you go to coach with regular people. understandable, to upgrade to first class anywhere is expense. good post.

I’m not sure I would go for this. If you wanted to spend more money, you would spend it on an upgrade anyway to get more room so I’m not sure where the value would be – especially as you don’t know the final cost difference. Still it is a good airline and I guess this new idea is yet to be proven.

From someone who always ends up in the middle seat (I kid you not, I’m cursed) .. it’s a interesting idea, that’s for sure. It’ll be fun to follow this one and see how much the seats end up going for. I can’t see the airlines losing money, so I’m thinking someone would have to bid at least 3x the cost for a seat. I wonder how that would compare to first class without the extra hassle of bidding?

I like that you are reviewing this airline. We hear so much about it, it is nice to get some insight on it

That’s really interesting. My parents are flying with Ethiad from New Zealand. I think having space next to you is really useful if you can afford it. We have never been first class so i guess extra space in economy is the next best thing.

I had experienced once Air travelling. Doesn’t matter which seat I took. Just as long as I am comfortable and that’s it.

This is a good, and a bad. For example, I always love requesting those type of seats (for free), but now that Etihad has opened the flood gates, other airlines might follow suit and start charging for this as well.

I know I would have said a long time ago that I would have paid for that. But really just what I want is room. Its the thing that’s the most valuable on a plane.

How pretty is this airline! I’ve only ever gone on cheap and cheery ones and I can let you know none of them came with TV’s on the back on the seats!

Sure shot a great idea, who doesn’t need this free space especially when traveling with family or on a business trip.

Good post, would not pay extra for this though and I think it is merely a smart business model. To me, as a frequent flyer with another airline, blocking the seat next to me is something that used to be done frequently in the past as a favour but is getting less common. To me being far away from babies or toddlers on a night flight might be worth a few extra bugs though 😉

Oh WOW. That’s definitely an interesting way to change up the game! It would be interesting to know how much it would be cost to say, bumping yourself up to Business!

This sounds like an awesome airline company! I’ve never tried flying with them before. I think it’s an interesting concept to get free empty seats. Imagine the possibilities!

Not sure if I would bid on a seat, but I really do like the sound of the concept as it might work out cheaper. It would be good if it was great value for money x

I don’t think I’d do this to be honest. It sounds like a bit of a faff. I do think a lot of people would go for it though!

I am not so sure that I like the sounds of this really. Why have the seats if they can bid to have them empty? Why not just offer somewhere that has no seats around? I don’t know seems a little silly.

Sounds like an interesting concept and I guess if you’re lucky to have an emptier flight and hardly anyone is bidding you could get extra space for little extra cost x

I have to admit, I have just been on a flight and was lucky enough to have a whole row to myself, allowing me to lie down and get some shut eye…whether or not I’d pay for the chance is a different matter…leave it to luck and fate!

One reason why I don’t like flying is because it can be uncomfortable. I like these airways are trying to provide other options. It is an interesting and fun way of doing it as well.

I think this would work for some, but personally, I would just buy up a first class seat. I would not only have more leg room, but I would also have better meal options.

I would go to business or first class rather and use my miles for that. But also I’m usually fine with economy class. I’m not that big so I can squeeze in fine and just pass out or watch movies 🙂

HAHAHA I don’t mean to be rude but everything is better than WizzAir haha!! Would love to be more comfortable on a flight that’s way over 3 hours so I like this concept 🙂

Traveling in Etihad business class is no lesser than an ultimate dream! Though I find this bidding free seat really stupid!
